Why do projects fail? Why are targets missed? Why don’t good people keep their promises? The single reason is that people are weak at answering the “when” question. When are you going to do this? Is is actually in your schedule? If your promise doesn’t have a solid plan with a realistic amount of time in your schedule, your promise is a fantasy. Making a promise without a realistic plan is lying.

How to create a strong promise:
When is the best time to negotiate a promise?

Before you make a promise,
while you are promising,
or after you have made a promise?

After you make a promise you have limited power to renegotiate.

Learn to catch yourself before you say “yes.” Saying no or responding with a counter-offer may not be acceptable in the culture of your team or organization. However, you can always raise concerns or add conditions before you say yes.
